What’s the Story?

A Personal Note from the team

What’s the Story?

We explore what it takes to open up walls in older homes—and how thoughtful design can balance modern flow with charm.

Hello Family, Friends, and Valued Clients,

This month, we’re excited to dive into one of the questions we hear most from homeowners: can a wall come down to open up a space? In our latest blog, How to Identify if a Wall is Load Bearing, we walk you through the first steps to figure out what’s possible in your home—and what to consider before making any big changes.

Every home has its own story, and every wall has its purpose.

Opening walls—especially in older homes—isn’t just about structure. It’s about finding the balance between honoring original details—like crown molding, built-ins, and historic woodwork—and creating the open flow families want today. Sometimes that means removing a wall and adding a beam; other times, a widened cased opening preserves the character while improving connection and sightlines.

We love helping families uncover the possibilities in their spaces—whether it’s creating a sun-filled kitchen, a flowing living area, or simply making daily life a little easier.

As summer winds down and we settle into the rhythm of school routines…

I always notice the subtle shift in the air—the days getting a little shorter, the evenings a bit cooler, and that unmistakable feeling of fall around the corner. It’s a time of transition, both busy and reflective, and it always reminds me to appreciate the small moments at home—the light streaming through a favorite window, or the cozy moments with the kids that make daily life feel just a little sweeter.

Until next time, we wish you a fun, safe, and happy fall from all of us on the Sylvestre Team (and Henry and Koda, too)!

Warmly,
