two-story addition Minneapolis
Foursquare, Doubled
In South Minneapolis, a two-story addition reworks the main level and adds a bonus space upstairs.
A classic 1920s American Four-Square is thoughtfully expanded with a two-story rear addition that reimagines the home’s layout while preserving its original charm. The addition includes new living space on both the main and upper levels, as well as a reworked layout inside and out.
Making Room Without Losing Character
This modest American Foursquare featured a classic boxy form, stucco exterior, and simple architectural detailing—typical of many South Minneapolis homes from the 1920s–1930s. The new addition needed to honor the home’s history from the outside. On the interior, an expanded kitchen, reworked side entry for a proper coat closet, centrally located powder room, and a covered porch.

Transitional Kitchen Design with Craftsman Influence
With more square footage to work with, we were finally able to give the homeowners the kitchen they’d long wanted. The design blends modern function with period-appropriate style. Shaker-style cabinets in warm natural wood add character and warmth. Simple hardware and thoughtful details keep the space grounded in the home’s history.

Designed to Function—Down to the Inch
In this kitchen, every detail reflects how the homeowners live day to day. Smart storage and subtle conveniences support their routine. A new layout and features that bring both purpose and personality to the space.

A standout feature in the kitchen is the Swedish-style sink with a built-in drainboard—practical, charming, and blends beautifully.

Hidden under-cabinet outlets keep cords out of sight, while integrated lighting adds a warm glow and makes everyday tasks easier.

Opening up the Flow
What was once a window is now a doorway leading to the new back deck. To avoid losing natural light, we chose a time-appropriate glass-paneled door that feels true to the home’s era while brightening the space. Inside, we also widened the opening between the kitchen and dining room to create a stronger connection and improve circulation between the two spaces.

And yes—we fixed the dreaded toe-stubber between the old kitchen and dining room floor.

Powder Room, Centrally Located
Adding a main-level bathroom was a game-changer. The placement of the powder room is convenient without being intrusive—a practical luxury in older homes where main-floor bathrooms are rare.

Designed for Function (and Fun!)
A custom-built cabinet near the dining area doubles as a cocktail bar. The homeowners even measured their plates to ensure the cabinetry was the exact depth they needed—form truly followed function. With enough counter space for mixing drinks and serving guests, the bar area adds a playful, personalized touch to the design.

Above the addition, a flexible bonus space provides room to grow—whether it’s for guests, work, hobbies, or simply a quiet escape.
